To people used to car explosions, high death counts, and vicious hip-hop, West Coast Jazz at first might sound like elevator music. It is not. Don’t make that mistake. Once you get used to it, you can hear how West Coast Jazz influenced later fusion jazz, “acid” jazz, and good “light” jazz such as /5(40).

Compilation of various artists, most tracks cool and breezy, with very good horns and rhythms representing the cool west coast era sound from mid-late fifties into the jazz-heavy sixties. This is a double-disk set. Jazz lovers should be more than satisfied. Excellent value. Don't pass it up!/5(3).

Since West Coast Jazz is not confined to a single person, look at the players on these releases, then find other recordings where they are leaders. It's a good way to get into the fun of West Coast Jazz, the original cool. Various Artists: The Jazz Sound from Peter Gunn (Fresh Sound, ) Post a comment. Tags. Building a Jazz Library Geoff.

West Coast jazz in my mind conjures up the laid back, swinging stuff of Dave Brubeck or Harold Rumsey at the Lighthouse (although the latter venue had some pretty energetic sessions.) This album has some laid back, 'cool' tracks to be sure, but there are some fiery, hard driving tracks that would have made Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers proud.5/5(1).
